about

Jed:
I combined two songs I'd written for Mike's and my freshman-year roxperiment Pavlov's Dogs into "The Four-Minute Mile." The verses came from a song that was never completed or titled; the closing refrain was the chorus from a ballad called "Oak and River." The lyrics were tweaked a little to reflect the Rebellion's discontent with the Albany music scene, referencing local indie label Paint Chip Records and the old "White Tower Hamburgers" sign left hanging in the QE2, with a little Old Testament and some "Ozymandias" thrown in.

I first performed the song at Mother Earth's on a Sunday afternoon; it was incomplete at the time, so I presented it as a "sneak preview." Hanslick Rebellion added the finished song to our repertoire before the band's second gig and it became a mainstay.

lyrics

The fruit of man's best minds and hands
The tower's now complete
It shines like polished silver
And it's right there on my street
It's two miles high by two blocks wide
And no one knows just what's inside
All things within its shadow died
Bereft of light and heat

Build it high and strong
Babble on, Babel on
One day the sun will rise
On a tower long gone
Gazing on your works
I can't help but crack a smile:
The kitchen of the future
The four-minute mile
Oh, yeah

Paint is chipping
You've been slipping
Let us pass you by
Thinking you had more tomorrows
Than there were stars in the sky
But the wind that once kept you aloft
Is now just an asthmatic cough
You should have watched who you pissed off
Here comes the little guy

Build it high and strong
Babble on, Babel on
One day the sun will rise
On a tower long gone
Gazing on your works
I can't help but crack a smile
You're the kitchen of the future
The four-minute mile
Oh, yeah

Ashes charred and spent
Like dust so old and out of reach
Stars numerous like grains of sand
All spread out on the beach
Yesterday's the dust
And tomorrows are the sand
But be careful now
For either one
Can slip right through your hand

You are spent
Like dust so old and out of reach
We are stars like grains of sand
All spread out on the beach
Yesterday's the dust
And tomorrows are the sand
But be careful now
For either one
Can slip right through your hand.
