about

Jed:
My first job out of college was writing catalog copy for a direct-mail company that targeted old people and white trash. Some of my greatest hits included the "Glow-in-the-Dark Doorknob," the "Musical T-Shirt," the "Guardian Angel Lamp-Topper," and "Glow-in-the-Dark Reusable Snowflakes" (whatever the fuck those were). Then they moved me over to their Holistic Medicine catalog, where I extolled the benefits of such time-tested remedies as "Bee Pollen," "Shark Cartilage," and "Royal Jelly."

This cheap-ass company had us working on 286 PCs, saving everything to 5.25" floppies. The screens were monochromatic - in my case, orange characters on the black. Admittedly, I did some of my best lyricizing on that machine because my mind was swimming with words all day, every day.

"Now I Have a Job" was written less than a week before we recorded the rebellion is here. I brought the lyric upstate for the show, presented it to the guys at rehearsal the night before, and we ripped that shit a new asshole.

I was ultimately fired from the copywriting gig for secretly maintaining a website about how the company was ripping people off (my conscience got the best of me). But the music goes on forever - YOU CAN'T FIRE ROCK AND ROLL!

lyrics

In a suit at a desk in a daze at the end of an hour and a half and another twenty minutes of the screen orange screen on the screen watch it flicker spelling words fancy words what is fancy what are words where am I?

I am out of order
Sorry for the inconvenience
Be back soon
Thank God you're too cheap to replace me

I get up and it's dark I get home and it's even darker night is to morning is to morning is tonight I go to bed there's a buzzing by the bed and it gets me out of bed and it's dark and it's dark when I get home where am I?

I am out of order
Sorry for the inconvenience
Be back soon
Thank God you're too cheap to replace me

Once I had friends once I had fun once I had life once I had hope once I had hands once I had love once I had mind once I had time once I had me
Now I have a job.
