The fruit of man's best minds and hands The tower's now complete It shines like polished silver And it's right there on my street It's two miles high by two blocks wide And no one knows just what's inside All things within its shadow died Bereft of light and heat Build it high and strong Babble on, Babel on One day the sun will rise On a tower long gone Gazing on your works I can't help but crack a smile: The kitchen of the future The four-minute mile Oh, yeah Paint is chipping You've been slipping Let us pass you by Thinking you had more tomorrows Than there were stars in the sky But the wind that once kept you aloft Is now just an asthmatic cough You should have watched who you pissed off Here comes the little guy Build it high and strong Babble on, Babel on One day the sun will rise On a tower long gone Gazing on your works I can't help but crack a smile You're the kitchen of the future The four-minute mile Oh, yeah Ashes charred and spent Like dust so old and out of reach Stars numerous like grains of sand All spread out on the beach Yesterday's the dust And tomorrows are the sand But be careful now For either one Can slip right through your hand You are spent Like dust so old and out of reach We are stars like grains of sand All spread out on the beach Yesterday's the dust And tomorrows are the sand But be careful now For either one Can slip right through your hand.

Tell us more of strength and class and dignity, my love As we trap you under glass and watch you pose, my love You can stuff yourself with fish eggs and champagne, my love But tonight, your shit will smell like shit. Too bad, my love Someday you will be old, and someday you will die, my love Be the model of perfection Be the pinnacle of grace As the tabloids proudly tell us what it took to make your face And we know what makes you fuss And we know what makes you cuss And we watch you on TV as you pretend to be us And we see you when you're sleeping And we hear you on the phone And we've seen you in the bathroom And we've seen you all alone And we've seen you hurt And we've seen you cry And we've even seen... Well, of course you never get what you deserve, my love And of course it's everybody's fault but yours, my love We've all seen your tits; you can put your tits away, my love And if you've got nothing new to add, shut up, my love. Someday you will be old, and someday you will die, my love Be the model of perfection Be the pinnacle of grace As the tabloids proudly tell us what it took to make your face And we know what makes you fuss And we know what makes you cuss And we watch you on TV as you pretend to be us And we see you when you're sleeping And we hear you on the phone And we've seen you in the bathroom And we've seen you all alone And we've seen you hurt And we've seen you cry And we've even seen...

Smoke (live) 06:27
First thing you see is the mark on me The long long shadow that snakes down Down the floor I drift, I drip, I slide I waft away like smoke off an altar And something of yours is mine I got an old friend I got a new friend We twist and spin in hand jive We do things in black rooms High in the brownstones You look up And around And wonder what I'm doing And if I'm doing it to you I got an old friend I got a new friend I got an old old old old mark on me Come shake the dusty hand of the rotten fruit man I got an old friend I got a new friend

The blank in the black In the hollows of her eyes Betrays none of the pain That she claims screams inside And the white of her skin Shakes off gene memory She's reborn as the child Of some hair dye and Brandon Lee. Boo. Go on then Take your pills again Darwin said You should just drop dead. The weak get eaten by the strong And Anne Rice fears there's nothing wrong With you a little evolution Wouldn't fix Mope some more beside the fire Wish that you were a vampire But you'll never be a vampire 'Cause they don't exist. Sorry. Go on then Slit your wrists again Darwin said You should just drop dead. Little goth, now don't be blue Species change, and so will you Soon enough you'll find Black doesn't go with everything.

In a suit at a desk in a daze at the end of an hour and a half and another twenty minutes of the screen orange screen on the screen watch it flicker spelling words fancy words what is fancy what are words where am I? I am out of order Sorry for the inconvenience Be back soon Thank God you're too cheap to replace me I get up and it's dark I get home and it's even darker night is to morning is to morning is tonight I go to bed there's a buzzing by the bed and it gets me out of bed and it's dark and it's dark when I get home where am I? I am out of order Sorry for the inconvenience Be back soon Thank God you're too cheap to replace me Once I had friends once I had fun once I had life once I had hope once I had hands once I had love once I had mind once I had time once I had me Now I have a job.

Stepped on a flowerbed, keeping his mind fed Thinking he's watching his heart Swallows his promise, Synaesthete's nightmare When words taste dark Scared of his mother, takes a new lover She's pretty and plastic and warm She's warm I gotta tick, tock I got one trick to top I gotta tick, tock Feels good, I should stop I gotta tick, tock I got one, I got one Runs down a hallway, whistles like thunder She can't breathe Swears he don't feed it, he's trying to beat it Well, if you'd listen to me Love's in a closet, pensive and bated Cradles a gun to keep warm And she's warm I gotta tick, tock I got one trick to top I gotta tick, tock Feels good, I should stop I gotta tick, tock I got one, I got one

She waits for a fable For the start of a story That she heard long ago Too good not to come true I can't compete, no way. Because the man, the man in the moon Is cooler than me, so constant and brightly smiling Oh the man, the man in the moon Cuts holes in the night and leaves me washed out by his light Oh to be the man in the moon Nothing to prove, swaddled in nonexistence Oh and I'll be sick of this soon But she'll remain In love with the man in the moon. I wait for a fable For the start of a story That I heard long ago Too good not to come true

Sucked off on a big hot Monday Gonna run you over, my dismal dear Sucked off on a big hot Monday Days of wine and roses are finally here. Rob is on call, Chris is AWOL Blow up a mall and maybe they'll learn Paulie's all wired, the dog is on fire That bitch is a liar and she's gonna burn 'Cause everything she says is all that matters She's a trilobite I am passive and resistant She's a trilobite 'Cause everything she says is all that matters She's a trilobite I am passive and resistant And I like you less with every instant, baby Sucked off on a big hot Monday Gonna run you over, my dismal dear Sucked off on a big hot Monday Days of wine and roses are finally here. Well, we're sorry, it's true - we're smarter than you We don't use a word unless we know what it means Neal's smile is wry, he's lithesome and spry He's wearing panties under his jeans 'Cause everything she says is all that matters She's a trilobite I am passive and resistant She's a trilobite 'Cause everything she says is all that matters She's a trilobite I am passive and resistant And I like you less with every instant, baby Sucked off on a big hot Monday Gonna run you over, my dismal dear Sucked off on a big hot Monday Days of wine and roses are finally here.

Right now, every eye in the room is on me But I'm making sure you're all I see You're the one with the hair and the smile and the eyes And the fucking little boyfriend I am the master of a million things I scribble words and everybody sings I am here to kick the world's ass, baby What's one little motherfucker? Here I am - I think you better leave your boyfriend now. Now is the time 'cause you bet I'm going fast I'm out the door in an hour and you know you'll be the last Thing that I ever think about if you fuck up and allow Someone else to get with this so you better leave your boyfriend NOW. Here I am - I think you better leave your boyfriend now. Right now, every eye in the room is on me But I'm making sure you're all I see And when I look down from the top of the world Will I see you with your boyfriend? Now is the time 'cause you bet I'm going fast I'm out the door in an hour and you know you'll be the last Thing that I ever think about if you fuck up and allow Someone else to get with this so you better leave your boyfriend NOW.

about

Spend one hot night with The Hanslick Rebellion! In an age of tweezed and tuned tracks and shamelessly calculated lo-fi posing, the rebellion is here is just what the doctor ordered: 16 scorching tracks recorded LIVE and raw by the group Metroland's J. Eric Smith proclaimed "possibly the finest band to ever call Albany home."

Frontmen Jed Davis and Mike Keaney deliver brutal, honest, visceral-yet-thoughtful lyrics, old-school anthemic choruses, and cover tunes nobody else would have the balls to play (their mashup of “Sugar Sugar” and “Heroin” alone is worth the price of admission).

"Time was this Albany, New York band made a big splash with a brash and unwholesome attitude. After one album, the rebellion is here, the band burned out and its founders took vows of silence from each other for ten years. One thing led to another and voila, we have one of the bawdiest, rudest live albums since Blue Oyster Cult’s On Your Feet Or On Your Knees."
Jedd Beaudoin, The Daily Copper

"The wicked cover of 'Pablo Picasso' blows not only Jonathan Richman's original out of the water, but seriously rivals David Bowie's on the coolness factor. This is a band that deserves to be famous... this live disc is a great time and certainly one of the most fun releases of the last few years."
Benjamin Ray, The Daily Vault

"If this isn't a rebellion, it's at least a welcome break from indie-rock form. Daringly recorded live before an audience in Albany, this quartet somehow puts a dozen tracks to tape without coming off as an upstate bar band. Alice Cooper sounded like this; except when Alice had a good idea, he got windy, and when he ran short on ideas, he got campy. The Hanslick Rebellion falls prey to neither, and encores their wonderful show about starlets, moonlight, and wanting to get laid, with a glowing cover of Del Shannon's 'Runaway.' It's as if alternative-rock never happened."
